Razorpay for Small Businesses: Is It Worth the Fees?

Razorpay for Small Businesses: Is It Worth the Fees?

If you run a small business in India and accept online payments, you have probably considered Razorpay. With over 10 million businesses using the platform, it is the default payment gateway for most Indian startups and SMBs. But is it actually the best choice for a small business? I have been using Razorpay for my online store for 18 months, and here is my honest take.

The Good

Easy Integration

Getting Razorpay running on my Shopify store took about 2 hours. Their documentation is excellent, the test mode works perfectly, and the dashboard is intuitive. For WordPress and custom websites, their plugins and SDKs make integration straightforward even for non-technical founders.

Payment Options

Razorpay supports everything Indian customers use — UPI, credit cards, debit cards, net banking, wallets, and EMI. The UPI payment success rate is noticeably higher than PayU in my experience. This matters because every failed payment is a lost sale.

Payout Speed

Standard settlement is T+2 days. With Razorpay X (their business banking product), you can get faster settlements. For a small business managing cash flow, the 2-day settlement cycle is reasonable.

The Bad

Fees Add Up

Standard rate is 2 percent per transaction. On UPI transactions, it is currently zero (RBI mandate). But on card payments, 2 percent of every transaction goes to Razorpay. If you process Rs 5 lakhs monthly in card payments, that is Rs 10,000 in fees. Over a year, Rs 1.2 lakhs — not insignificant for a small business.

Support for Small Accounts

When I had a settlement delay (happened once in 18 months), getting someone on the phone was impossible. Email support took 36 hours. If you are processing high volumes, you get a dedicated account manager. Small businesses get the self-serve treatment.

Alternatives to Consider

PayU: Similar features, slightly lower fees for some transaction types. Less polished dashboard.

Cashfree: Growing competitor with competitive pricing. Good for subscription businesses.

Instamojo: Simpler setup, good for solo entrepreneurs and freelancers. Limited features compared to Razorpay.

Verdict

Razorpay is the safest choice for most small businesses in India. The integration is easy, reliability is high, and the ecosystem (Razorpay X, Payment Links, Invoicing) is comprehensive. But if you are watching every rupee and most of your payments are card-based, compare the fee structures carefully. Sometimes a 0.5 percent difference in fees translates to lakhs annually.
