When I tell other founders that I got my MVP built for under Rs 1 lakh, they usually do not believe me. Then they ask who built it, and then they ask for the contact. So I figured I should just write the whole story down.
The Problem
I am building a logistics coordination platform for small businesses in tier-2 cities. Think of it as a simplified fleet management tool — drivers check in, dispatchers assign routes, customers track deliveries. Nothing revolutionary, but solving a real problem I saw while running my family distribution business in Indore.
I needed an MVP — functional enough to test with 10-15 pilot customers, polished enough that they would not think it was a college project.
The Freelancer Experiment (Month 1-2)
My first instinct was to hire a freelancer. Found someone on a popular freelancing platform who quoted Rs 35,000 for a Flutter app. Seemed like a great deal.
Two months later, I had spent Rs 25,000 (partial payments) and had a half-finished app with a broken map integration. The freelancer was working three other projects simultaneously and my app kept getting delayed. After week 6, responses slowed to one message per day. By week 8, I cut my losses.
Lesson learned: cheap does not mean economical.
Finding an Agency
A friend who runs a D2C brand in Pune had used ZoopCoder for his website. He said they were reliable and reasonably priced. I was skeptical about agencies — I assumed they would all charge Rs 3-5 lakhs for an app. But their starting price for apps was Rs 50,000, which was within my revised budget.
The Actual Costs
Here is exactly what I paid:
- Flutter app development: Rs 65,000
- UI/UX design (included): Rs 0 (part of the package)
- Play Store listing: Rs 0 (they handled it)
- One design revision round: Rs 0 (included)
- Total: Rs 65,000
The 30-40-30 payment structure meant I paid Rs 19,500 upfront, Rs 26,000 at the midpoint demo, and Rs 19,500 at delivery. For a cash-strapped startup, this staging was a relief — I could see progress before committing the next payment.
Timeline: 6 Weeks
- Week 1: Requirements discussion, wireframes on WhatsApp
- Week 2: UI designs. I approved with minor changes.
- Week 3-4: Core development — map integration, driver check-in, route assignment
- Week 5: Customer tracking module, push notifications
- Week 6: Testing, bug fixes, Play Store submission
What Went Well
- WhatsApp group with the dev team meant I could send voice notes explaining features instead of writing long emails
- Weekly screen recordings of the app running on actual devices
- They suggested a few features I had not thought of (offline mode for drivers with poor connectivity)
- Play Store approval went through on the first attempt
What Could Have Been Better
- The initial map integration had some lag with 15+ drivers on screen simultaneously. Took an extra 3 days to optimize.
- I wish the design phase had been longer — some UI decisions felt rushed in hindsight
- Post-launch support was 30 days free. After that, any changes would be billed separately. Fair, but I would have preferred a longer support window for an MVP.
Current Status
The app has been live for 8 months now. 12 businesses are using it actively. I have since paid for two additional feature updates (Rs 15,000 each). Total investment so far: Rs 95,000 — still under 1 lakh for the core product.
For any founder on a budget: it is possible to build a real, functional app for under Rs 1 lakh. You just need to pick the right partner and be very clear about your MVP scope.
